Whether you approach the Carson Valley from I-395 or Kingsbury Grade coming from Lake Tahoe the first thing you will notice are the breathtaking views of the Carson Valley located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range in western Nevada. 395 is surrounded by mountains, the Sierras to the west and the Pine Nut range to the east.  From the majestic views of Job’s Peak, scenes of eagles and hawks flying over open range and pasture lands, vast tracks of green agricultural lands, views of the Pine Nut Mountains, it’s all here in the beautiful Carson Valley.  Best of all it’s a short drive to Lake Tahoe where you will find some of the most spectacular scenery on earth.

Actually Carson Valleys close proximity to Lake Tahoe is one of the big attractions. Carson Valley is located just south of Carson City.  Within a short driving distance there are unlimited outdoor recreational activities, casinos, resorts, and Reno International Airport.  The Carson Valley is known as one of the best hand gliding spots in the world.

Carson Valley is comprised of Genoa and the sister towns Minden-Gardnerville as well as Topaz Lake.

Many are drawn to the foothills of the Sierras where there are plenty of tall trees, and valley is green. Located here is the quaint and charming town of Genoa, pronounced ge-NO-a.  This small town was established in 1850 by the Mormons as the first settlement in the Nevada territory.  When driving through Genoa do not be surprised if you have to have to stop for mule deer crossing the highway. Genoa is home to Nevada’s oldest bar, has two parks and the movie “Misery” was shot here.

Located further to the east is the cozy town of Minden.  This unique little town was a planned community designed around the town square in 1905 and was basically a railroad hub for agriculture in the area.   Minden is named after Minden, Germany which the home town to the founders father. (H.F. Danberg Jr.)  The small town feel is alive and well today with events such as the Concert in the Park, Carson Valley Days and the Minden Christmas Street Festival.  Minden has experienced some growth after being fairly stable for many years.  North Minden provides most of the retail shopping for Carson, Minden-Gardnerville, and Lake Tahoe.

Minden and Gardnerville’s borders touch so the locals often run the two towns names together Minden-Gardnerville.

Gardnerville is a farm town that was established in 1879.   Many people fall in love with the old barns seen throughout the area.  You’ll often see people pulled over to the side of the road sketching or painting the old barns and Jobs Peak.   Much of the growth came to the area when Casino workers from the Lake Tahoe could not afford to purchase homes at the lake and moved to the Ranchos.   As time went on more and more people have been drawn here because of the unspoiled scenery and small town feel.  Lampe Park is wonderful place to take the family with its baseball fields, tennis courts, picnic shelter and volleyball courts.  Across the street is a state of the art skate board facility.  In addition, there is a swim center for people of all ages.

Topaz Lake is the perfect out door retreat for those who like to fish, boat, or water ski.  Topaz Lake Park is about 90 acres on the shores of Lake Topaz.  This is a popular spot for bird watchers in addition to anglers and water sports
enthusiast.

Carson City the state capital of Nevada is located to the north of Carson Valley.  Carson City started out as a trading post and stopover for travelers on their way to California.  Named after the mountain scout Kit Carson, Carson City was founded during the silver mining boom of the mid 1800’s.  In 1864 Nevada was declared a State with Carson City as its capital.  For many years Carson City held the status of “America’s smallest capital”. Carson City has many historic buildings and homes, is a flourishing commercial center, and has numerous trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding.
The 28 mile drive to Reno will go by a lot quicker upon completion of the Carson City Freeway.
